GOBankingRates searched the states along the East Coast from north to south (Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida) to determine their accessibility.

18. Manchester, New Hampshire

Manchester, in the south of the state, has something for lovers of all seasons. With an average of 60 inches of snow in Manchester per year, skiers can head to the city's McIntrye Ski Resort. North Carolina's largest city is home to more than 10 Fortune 1000 companies, including Bank of America. It is the only city in the study with two professional sports franchises: the NFL Panthers and the NBA Hornets. It is also a popular destination for residents to move to. Charlotte ranked #4 on Penske Truck Rental's list of top 10 relocation destinations for 2021.

Popular with retirees, Fort Myers is a playground for all ages. With year-round warm weather, residents can take advantage of the city's extensive network of parks or participate in activities such as boating, fishing, hiking and tennis. And, of course, golf.

The downside: Fort Myers has one of the highest average monthly rents on this list. The benefit: Florida residents pay no state income tax.

15. Wilmington, Carolina do Norte

Located on the Cape Fear River, Wilmington has provided the backdrop for a number of movies and television shows, including Iron Man 3, Matlock, Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill. But it is also a popular location for the royal residence.

13. Durham, North Carolina

11. Raleigh, North Carolina

Raleigh, one of the other legs of Research Triangle Park, is the state capital of North Carolina. Raleigh residents can find jobs with the state government or through RTP, which is the nation's largest research park and home to hundreds of companies. 10. Charlottesville, Virgínia

The first of three Virginia locations on the list, Charlottesville is steeped in history. Historic sites include Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. Adjacent to Monticello is Highland, home to fifth president James Monroe. And about 30 miles north is Montpelier, where the fourth president, James Madison, lived with his wife Dolley. Jefferson also founded the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.

9. Richmond, Virginia

  • Average 1 bedroom rent:1.114 $
  • Population:226.622

If you live or work in downtown Richmond, you may never need to leave the neighborhood. Leave your home or office and head to the James River, where you'll find the only Class IV rapids in the middle of the country.

Or bike along the river on the Virginia Capital Trail, sample craft beer on the Richmond Beer Trail or visit one of the state capital's many museums.

8. Playa Virginia, Virginia

Along the coast, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay, is Virginia Beach. With its coastal vibe, Virginia Beach has a different vibe than Charlottesville and Richmond.

It's known for its tasty food scene, arts and entertainment, family-friendly areas and, of course, its beaches. Given its proximity to the water, it's no surprise that Virginia Beach has the highest rental costs on the list -- about $150 more than the second highest on the list.

East of Orlando is Melbourne on the Space Coast. Nearby is Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, which launches satellites and spacecraft en route to the International Space Station.

3. Greensboro, Carolina do Norte

Halfway between Charlotte and Raleigh is North Carolina's fifth city on the list, Greensboro. It is the cheapest of all the cities in the study, with a cost of living index 9% below the national average.

Its location also allows Greensboro residents to spend the weekend away, with trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the beach to the southeast being a manageable trip.

2. Greenville, Carolina do Sul

  • State median monthly income:3.952 $
  • Average 1 bedroom rent:1.059 $
  • Population:67.737

If you're new to Greenville, start by finding Falls Park on Reedy's. Located on South Main Street, it offers a lot of nature or activities for the whole family, such as: B. Walking along the river or watching the waterfalls.

When you're hungry or thirsty, walk along Main Street, lined with trees with twinkling lights, and stop at one of the many restaurants, breweries, wineries or cafes.

Methodology:For this article, GOBankingRates first determined (1) the average monthly wages in the third quarter of 2021 for Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina , Georgia, Florida, according to a press release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics County Employment and Wages. GOBankingRates then found (2) cities in selected states where the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in April 2022 from ApartmentList did not exceed 30% of the average monthly income of state residents (estimated by professionals recommended by the housing budget guide). ); and (3) population figures for each city obtained from the US Census Bureau. Cities included in the ranking had (4) an overall cost of living index, derived from Sperling's Best Places, that was no more than 10% higher than the national average; and (5) Areavibes-related habitability scores greater than 65. All data was collected and is current as of May 11, 2022.
